Municipal Public Works Supervisor - Full-time

Department: Public Works

Reports To: Borough Manager FLSA

Status: Non-Exempt

Location: Borough of Ambridge


Job Summary:

The Municipal Public Works Supervisor is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising the daily operations and maintenance of the borough’s public works infrastructure. This includes streets, sidewalks, stormwater systems, public buildings, parks, and fleet maintenance. The supervisor ensures that work is completed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with municipal, state, and federal regulations.


Key Responsibilities:

· Supervise and coordinate the activities of public works crews involved in maintenance, repair, and construction.

· Plan, schedule, and assign work based on operational priorities and available resources.

· Conduct inspections of work sites to ensure quality control, safety compliance, and adherence to project timelines.

· Maintain records related to maintenance schedules, work orders, materials used, and personnel.

· Assist in preparing the department’s budget and monitor expenditures.

· Order supplies, materials, and equipment as needed; oversee maintenance and repair of vehicles and tools.

· Respond to emergency situations such as snow removal, flooding, and road hazards; coordinate appropriate responses.

· Serve as a liaison between the public, contractors, and other government departments.

· Train and evaluate the performance of subordinates; provide guidance and corrective actions as needed.


Education & Experience:

· High school diploma or equivalent.

· Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in public works or municipal operations, including supervisory experience.

Licenses & Certifications:

· Valid driver’s license (CDL may be required).


Skills & Competencies:

· Knowledge of public works operations, equipment, and maintenance techniques.

· Strong leadership and team-building skills.

· Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.

· Familiarity with safety regulations and construction standards.

· Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, maps, and plans.


Working Conditions:

· Primarily outdoor work in all weather conditions; occasional office work for planning and reporting.

· Subject to emergency call-ins and extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

· Physical demands include walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), and operating equipment.




Public Works Employee - Full-time

Position Summary:

The Public Works Employee is responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled labor tasks involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public infrastructure, including streets, parks, public buildings, and other municipal facilities. Work involves operating equipment, manual labor, and interacting with the public in a professional manner.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Perform street maintenance including pothole repair, paving preparation, snow and ice removal, and street cleaning.

· Maintain municipal grounds, parks, and recreation areas including mowing, tree trimming, landscaping, and litter removal.

· Operate a variety of light and heavy equipment such as dump trucks, snowplows, tractors, mowers, and skid steer loader.

· Perform building maintenance tasks such as carpentry, masonry, painting, electrical, and plumbing.

· Install, maintain, and repair signage, sidewalks, and curbs.

· Respond to emergency calls including inclement weather response and infrastructure failures.

· Follow all safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE) if necessary.

· Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment operated.

· Interact courteously and effectively with residents, coworkers, and other departments.


Education and Experience:

· High school diploma or GED required.

· Previous experience in construction, public works, or a related field preferred.


Licenses and Certifications:

· Valid PA Driver’s License required. (CDL may be required).


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Basic knowledge of tools, equipment, and methods used in public works maintenance and construction.

· Ability to operate equipment safely and effectively.

· Physical ability to perform strenuous work in varying weather conditions.

· Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

· Basic record-keeping and communication skills.


Working Conditions:

· Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather.

· Exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and hazardous conditions is common.

· Frequent lifting of objects up to 50 lbs. and occasional lifting of heavier items.

· May be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, or overtime in response to emergencies.
